A man wanted for running out of a discount store with a bag full of cash-register receipts in Sioux City last month is jailed in Nebraska, and faces far more serious charges in Texas. Twenty-two-year-old Randy Allen Floyd waived a preliminary hearing Monday in Grand Island, but Hardin County Sheriff’s Captain Johnny Westbrook in Kountze, Texas, says he’s accused of killing a man before he showed up in the Midwest.

The captain went to Nebraska and interviewed Floyd, and got a statement from him. They have charges filed against him in Nebraska, Iowa has charges, and Texas has a murder warrant and other charges. if extradition goes through, Floyd won’t face the Texas death penalty. In Texas there are only some kinds of charges that carry a death sentence. It’s true, he killed a man — but Westbrook says that alone doesn’t make it a "capital murder."

His wife’s reportedly told authorities they drove across the country, stopping to burglarize stores to get money. In Sioux City, they think he merely followed a clerk emptying cash registers and then grabbed the bag and ran off with it. A couple days after that Floyd was identified as the man found fleeing an attempted break-in at a gas station in Wayne Nebraska…and allegedly drove his vehicle toward the officer who found him there.

In Nebraska, he’s charged with an assault on a peace officer. Captain Westbrook says they’ve been dealing with 22-year-old Floyd for a couple of years in Texas. "I would think his young life is over with," Westbrook says. When Floyd’s extradited to Texas, he’ll face charges including murder, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, assault with intent to cause bodily injury, family domestic, child endangerment, and criminal mischief. His wife’s wanted on a Texas warrant for burglary and the couple’s baby son and 5-year-old are now in the custody of a relative.
