We now know the source of the salmonella that caused a recent peanut butter recall and sickened hundreds of people nationwide, including several Iowans. ConAgra Foods based in Omaha says that moisture from a leaky roof and a faulty sprinkler allowed the bacteria to infect its finished Peter Pan and Great Value peanut butter products.

The company now plans to make the necessary repairs to the Georgia plant. Raw peanuts and the finished peanut butter will now be stored in different areas. The plant will also get a new roof. ConAgra is doing what is necessary to ensure that the peanut butter is safe when it returns to store shelves in July. More than 400 people across the country were sickened from eating the contaminated peanut butter.
