Five new sports will be offered at this summer’s Iowa Games. Executive director Jim Hallihan says making their debut this year are granny basketball, adult basketball for 18 and over and 30 and over, bicycle tours of ten, 25 and 50 miles, western action shooting and something called the adventure race. You get a team of people and get information and then it takes you four to six hours to complete.

Hallihan says there would be a running, rowing and cycling component. Along the way you might also have to do a task such as picking up a bow and arrow and hitting a target. Hallihan says western action shooting involves dressing up in western clothing. It also includes a fast draw competition.

Granny basketball has received a lot of publicity as of late and Hallihan feels it is the right time to add it to the Iowa Games. He says it will be a spin off of the six-on-six basketball they added last year.

Hallihan says sports are normally added to the Iowa Games after they are approached by individuals who are willing to run them. The Iowa Games will be held over two weekends. July 12th through the 15th and the 20th through the 22nd in Ames.
