As he enters his senior season at Iowa State quarterback Bret Meyer is starting over. The Atlantic native has been ISU’s starter the past three seasons but after a banner sophomore campaign in 2005 Meyer and the Cyclones failed to live up to pre-season expectations with a 4-8 finish in 2006.

Iowa State coach Gene Chizik says they tried to not look back and prepare Meyer for 2007 without bringing in the issues from the past. Chizik says they’er cleaning the slate for everybody and in preparing for next season. He says Meyer is just like everyone else, he’s trying to learn a new offense and trying to do everything he can without being a robot.

Chizik says Meyer has done a good job of adjusting to the changes. He says they want him to learn the offense and manage the football team and be a leader, and they’re pleased with where Meyer is at.

Meyer says he is approaching this season as a fresh start. Meyer says last year was last year, and he is back on a new slate. After three years of leading the Cyclone offense Meyer now has to learn a new one. He says it was hard at first with the old offense in his head, but now Meyer says he’s picking it up pretty well.

Meyer says he has gotten more comfortable with the changes as the spring has progressed. He says there are a lot of options and the offense is wide open with a lot of guys having a chance to make plays. The Cyclones close out spring drills with a scrimmage on Saturday that is open to the public.
