Iowa football coach Kirk Ferentz believes the mental approach the Hawkeyes took into the Alamo Bowl against Texas has carried over to spring practice. After losing five of six games to finish the 2006 season The Hawkeyes had a spirited month of workouts before falling to the Longhorns 26-24.

Ferentz says December was probably their best month as a football team and probably started moving back to where they wanted to be. He says they’ve only had one workout this spring where he didn’t think they were doing as much as they should be.

The Hawkeyes close out spring drills with a public scrimmage on Saturday in Kinnick Stadium. Ferentz says the seniors have been giving good leadership and they’re trying to move ahead a step at a time. Ferentz says he believes Iowa is more than just a "football school". Since leaving for New Mexico former basketball coach Steve Alford has said football was the top priority at the school.

Ferentz says in his 17 years coaching at Iowa the fans have been supportive of all the programs. He says that’s something they sell in recruiting, that without a pro team in Iowa, the college teams have all the focus.
