Iowans have barely a month left to sign up for the Senior Olympics. Organizer and president Dan Lake says this will be the 20th time the event has been held. A "senior" in the rules for this event, is anybody fifty or older. "The thing that makes it so fun for me," Lake says, "is to just watch the whole range of participants that are there."

He says about twenty-percent are genuinely good athletes who are competitive come for some hardcore competition, and they’ll find it. The majority of those who come are there for the social interaction. People come back every year from out-of-state, simply to renew the friendships they’ve made.

New this year are more social events, including several sports like shuffleboard and horseshoes, and a "dog jog" open to both participants and drop-ins. More news and registration info are on-line at the Iowa Senior Olympics website , and the deadline to sign up is May 18.
