A summer basketball league in Iowa City is entering it’s third decade of providing fans with a chance to preview the upcoming college basketball season. The Prime Time League is entering its 21st year and was formed at the urging of then Iowa coach Tom Davis.

Iowa City attorney Randy Larson who serves as league commissioner says Davis had a summer league the year before when he was at Stanford. Larson says he was already playing ball with many of the guys and decided to put the league together and get approval from the NCAA.

He says similar leagues are sprouting up across the country. The league is popular with Iowa fans who can watch former, current and future Hawkeye players perform and Larson says the league aslso includes a number of UNI players. Larson says unlike some summer leagues, the P-T-L stresses team basketball. Larson says they have 500 or so fans there, and that makes the players play hard. Larson says they also empower the coaches to get the players to play hard or sit out.

A similar league for women, The Game Time League is entering its seventh season. Tryouts for both leagues are this weekend. The men play on Monday and Wednesday nights beginning June 18th. The women play on Tuesday and Thursday. Larson says all the games are held at the North Liberty Community Center.
