Officials say an Osceola man was killed Thursday after he fired a gun at a policeman.

Kevin Winker of the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation says it all started shortly after one o’clock Thursday afternoon.  "The preliminary information in reference to this investigation indicates that when officers approached this subject, the subject fired at an officer who then returned fire and the subject was killed," Winkler says.

The shooting happened on the southwest corner of the town square in downtown Osceola. "There are businesses in the area," Winkler says. "It would be considered a high traffic area for Osceola."

Osceola’s mayor told Radio Iowa on Thursday afternoon that the man had been firing his gun before the town’s police arrived to surround him. "We are very early on in the investigation and those types of details will likely come out in a subsequent release," Winkler says.

The officer who fired the fatal shot has been placed on administrative leave, which is customary when a police officer is involved in a shooting.
