A West Des Moines man faces charges after allegedly hitting a pedestrian on Wednesday night and driving away from the accident scene.

At about nine o’clock last night, a Des Moines cop questioned a 62-year-old man who a telephone tipster had complained was acting suspicious. The cop determined the man was just taking a walk.

As the cop got back in her squad car, she heard a loud thunk. She turned and saw the man lying in the street and a damaged car speeding away from the scene. Two minutes later, another cop spotted a car nearby with extensive windshield damage.

That car’s 51-year-old driver has been charged with drunken driving. Other charges are pending. The pedestrian died this morning.

Another accident yesterday in eastern Iowa, on I-80 near the Wilton exit, killed one woman and seriously injured another.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, 78-year-old Betty Goodworth of Davenport was driving a minivan, lost control, crossed the median, and ran into a semi. The 54-year-old passenger in the van, who has the same last name as the driver, was killed in the crash.
