During an appearance on Iowa Public Television, Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards offered a unique critique of the current president’s job performance.
Some call it an idiom. Others say it’s a euphemism. Whatever. You’re going to recognize it.
"We need a president of the United States who can walk and chew chewing gum at the same time," Edwards said.
Edwards went on to suggest Bush had been "completely and totally captivated" by a single issue. "Do we need to address both short-term and long-term the forces of terrorism and the risk it creates for America and our allies? Of course we do," Edwards said. "But on top of we have to deal with these other problems: universal health care, energy transformation, families who live in poverty. All of these things are huge issues."
Edwards held a news conference today, too, and Edwards was asked if he wanted to show reporters that he could walk and chew gum at the same time.
Edwards laughed.
"I’m not sure I can," he added, then walked out the door.
Mary Tiffany, a spokeswoman for the Republican Party of Iowa, issued a statement this afternoon, calling Edwards a hypocrite.
"People that live in glass mansions shouldn’t throw stones," she said.
