Iowa is playing host to some large scale sporting events this summer and retailers are hoping they’ll bring a boost in business.

Shawn Rolland of the Iowa Department of Economic Development says the events should draw thousands from both in and out of state."At a minimum, these folks are going to be purchasing food, drinks, and a place to spend the night", Rolland says. "The economic impact of that is substantial."

Some of the sporting events will showcase the state to a national TV audience. Rolland says that coverage can change an outsiders’ perception of Iowa. "(Iowa) is a great place to live and work, but these events demonstrate it’s also a great place to get outdoors and have fun, and the value of that is priceless," Roland says.

Rolland says Iowa lawmakers have been working to enhance recreation and tourism opportunities in the state. He cites programs like Vision Iowa, the Community Attractions and Tourism Program, and Great Places, "they’re all trying to create new destinations for Iowans and our visitors to enjoy."

This weekend, Des Moines is playing host to a World Cup Triathlon, the only event of it’s kind in the US this year.

Next weekend, Newton and the Iowa Speedway will be home to the "Iowa Corn Indy 250".

Then, in early July, some of the world’s best golfers will be in the Quad Cities for the John Deere Classic.
