One man is dead after a single-engine airplane crashed in a field just east of the Quad Cities this morning. The FAA says the plane was from Waterloo. Illinois State Police spokesperson Jayson Wilson says a couple of witnesses were about a half mile from the scene.

"They heard the plane engine and then they heard a thud," Wilson says, "that’s when they drove over and called (the sheriff’s office)." FAA and National Transportation Safety Board investigators have been sent to the scene.

Wilson says he doesn’t want to speculate what went wrong, but adds "it looks like it did come in at a very steep angle." An FAA spokeswoman says the plane was headed for Marshall, Kentucky. The person killed in the crash has not been identified.
