If you planned to go camping at a state park for Independence Day, and didn’t book a site ahead of time, you’re probably out of luck. Kevin Szcodronski, chief of the Iowa DNR Parks Bureau, says when July 4th falls in the middle of the week, both weekends – prior to and after the holiday – are extremely busy at state parks.

Szcodronski says Iowans reserved July 4th camp sites on-line months ago, but there may be a handful of spots available. "The sites that have electricity, those reserved sites are booked full," Szcodronski says, "and the first-come, first-serve walk-in sites will probably be full by (Friday)." The Iowa DNR will fully staff the state parks through the extended holiday weekend.
