Car lovers across central Iowa have nearly whiplashed themselves the past few days, as hundreds of antique and classic cars have rumbling down the road to Des Moines. The 16th annual Heartland Nationals Car Show is underway at the Iowa State Fairgrounds, sponsored by Goodguys, where John Drummond is spokesman.

Drummond says they’re expecting about 3,000 cars from as far away as Texas, Montana, Canada and up and down the East Coast, as "it’s really a destination." He says some of the vehicles are customized hot rods, others are original one-owner cars, while others have been carefully restored to appear as if they just rolled off the showroom floor — many decades ago.

Drummond says they’re celebrating two milestones — the 1932 model year is 75 years old, and the 1957 model year is 50 years old, so those "automotive icons" will be highlighted. He says this is the largest car show of its type in the entire Midwest and that’s why participants are here from across the country.

He says you’ll see everything from a 1923 Ford all the way to a 1972 Chevy muscle car, running a 55-year span of automotive ingenuity. The show runs through Sunday. For more information, surf to " www.good-guys.com " or " www.iowastatefair.org ".
