Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee says the recent sparring between GOP rival Mitt Romney and Democratic candidate Barack Obama about what kindergarteners should be taught about sex is an example of how the campaign debate is off-kilter.

"That’s an issue that ought to be decided, first, by mothers and fathers," Huckabee says. "If it’s decided at all by any level of government, it needs to be at the local and, at best, the state level. I’m not sure that the President of the United States needs to be refereeing over everything that’s taught in every community in America."

The debate between Obama and Romney about sex ed just contributes to the "game show" atmosphere of the race, according to Huckabee.

"We end up, as presidential candidates, not talking about what we’re going to do to improve education and health care and national security," Huckabee says.

Huckabee is in the midst of barnstorming Iowa in advance of the Iowa Republican Party’s August 11th Straw Poll. He made stops in Muscatine, Washington, Ottumwa and Mount Pleasant yesterday.

"They don’t want to just hear what we believe. They want to hear what we have done," Huckabee says. "They want to know what we would do — do we actually have the courage not to say what we believe in doing but what would we actually commit to doing."

Huckabee will be at the Smokey Row Coffee House in Oskaloosa this morning at nine.
