The two-day annual state sales tax holiday begins today. It’s the eighth year for the holiday created the state legislature to give families a break on school clothes and retailers a boost in businesses. Iowa Department of Revenue spokesperson Renee Mulvey explains how the holiday works.

Mulvey says it includes only clothing and footwear you would wear everyday for play, school or work. Those items are exempt from the five-percent state tax, and local option taxes. Mulvey says things that are not covered include computers and school supplies, or athletic accessories. She says it does not include cleated shoes, as those are not something you would wear every day.

The individual items must cost less than 100 dollars to be eligible. Mulvey says the taxes saved each year during the holiday amounts to between two to three million dollars. For more information, go to the Iowa Department of Revenue website .
