The funeral is at 11 o’clock this morning at the Fort Dodge Senior High School gym for Sergeant Jon Bonnell, Junior. The Fort Dodge Marine died a week ago today when he stepped on an improvised explosive device while on patrol in Iraq’s Al Anbar province.

Bonnell’s body returned home to Fort Dodge on Saturday as residents stood under a hot sun holding American flags as the motorcade made its way through the community and towards the Gunderson Funeral Home where the casked was delivered. Large crowds were on hand for yesterday’s visitation.

The 22-year-old Bonnell was a member of the B Battery, 11th Marine Regiment based at Camp Pendleton, California. Since Bonnell’s death was announced, flags all over Fort Dodge have been at half staff. Today all flags at government buildings and public places all around Iowa will be at half staff until sunset this evening in memory of Bonnell.
