Michigan politicians are preparing to put more pressure on Iowans who set the date of the Caucuses.

The two state parties in Michigan reportedly have agreed to move Michigan’s presidential primary to January 15, 2008.

As you may recall, South Carolina’s Republican Party has moved its contest ahead. New Hampshire’s Secretary of State is said to be prepared to move that state’s presidential primary earlier in January in response.

With Michigan’s primary on January 15, New Hampshire would likely hold its voting on January 8. That means Iowa’s Caucuses — if they are to remain first — would have to be held before that.

State law requires Iowa’s Caucuses to be held eight days ahead of any other state’s contest, but Governor Chet Culver said last week he was prepared to change that law to ensure the Caucuses are held in 2008. The available dates in January, however, appear to be shrinking.
