The foundation that oversees the Terrace Hill governor’s mansion is offering a chance for you to see the historic landmark and meet Iowa’s First Lady. Terrace Hill Foundation development director, Jaqueline Devine, says the events are called "Teas at Terrace Hill." The tradition was started seven years ago and current First Lady Mari Culver is continuing the tradition of the teas on the third Monday of the month.

There are two teas, one at 11:30 and one at 2:30. Devine says the teas follow a set schedule. You’re invited to tour the first two floors of the home, the First Lady gives welcoming remarks, and then you sit down and eat a "high tea" prepared by the governor’s chef and volunteers. "And as they always say ‘if you go away hungry it’s your own fault,’ because it’s wonderful food," according to Devine.

The teas offer you more than what you get on a normal Terrace Hill tours. Devine says you get to sit down, look around and relax. She says people usually bring family along and you get to take pictures which are not allowed during regular tours.

The cost of the tea is thirty dollars, with part of the money going toward the upkeep of Terrace Hill. One of the repair projects is replacing part of the home’s roof. She says they’re replacing it in a manner that should have a 100-year life. And Devine says there are many other things that need to be done.

Devine says you need to make a reservation by calling 515-280-3450. Devine says space is limited each month.

Each tea includes scones, finger sandwiches, desserts and tea along with an educational program.
