The debate continues on Iowa’s college campuses over a proposal to arm campus police. An open forum is scheduled for Thursday afternoon at the University of Iowa on the proposal to allow campus law officers to routinely carry firearms.

U-of-I Public Safety Director Chuck Green says the campus security officers receive the same certified training as police and deserve to carry guns. The U-of-I Faculty Council, a division of the Faculty Senate, voted 12-3 this week to back the proposal. The Faculty Senate at the University of Northern Iowa, meanwhile, has voted against the plan to arm campus police.

The Faculty Senate at Iowa State will vote on the matter next Tuesday, and the Board of Regents will consider the proposal at it’s meeting in Council Bluffs next week.
