Iowa is part of a multi-state settlement with United Healthcare over insurance claim payments. Iowa Insurance Division communications director, Tom Alger, says Iowa will get 140-thousand dollars from a 20-million dollar overall settlement.

He says the issue involved some "operating platforms" the company was using that led to a nationwide problem of delays and denials of claims. Alger says the payment is just one part of the settlement. Alger says they’re also looking at a process improvement system that requires the company to make changes or face additional penalties.

Overall Alger says Iowa did not have that many problems with the system, but Insurance Commissioner Susan Voss was one of the leaders in putting together the settlement. Alger encourages you to call if you have any type of problems with insurance companies.

Algers says you can call their toll-free number or file a complaint on the  Insurance Division website .The number is 877-955-1212.
