Wind gusts near 50 miles per hour are not uncommon around Iowa today. The National Weather Service has posted a wind advisory for most of the state, north of Interstate 80. Meteorologist Miles Schumacher says it’s the result of a collision between two strong pressure systems to our north.

Schumacher says Steamboat Rock and Carroll are among the towns that have reported wind gusts of over 50 mph. The strong winds are expected to diminish by sunset and give way to some very cold temperatures. Schumacher says high temperatures in Iowa on Tuesday will only reach the upper 30’s and 40’s. Low temperatures the next few nights will be in the 20’s.

Far northeast Iowa, around Decorah and Waukon, could even see some flurries tonight. Schumacher says a warming trend is forecast for the end of the week and there’s a possibility for the first rainfall in three weeks by next Sunday or Monday.
