Classes were disrupted at a northeastern Iowa high school Thursday, when a student entered the building with injuries from a stab wound. Officers were called to the Dike-New Hartford High School at 9 a.m. and remained there as a precaution for a few hours.

Grundy County Sheriff Rick Penning says the victim was taken to a Waterloo hospital. "The student’s wounds are non-life threatening," Penning says, "and the biggest thing we’re expressing to the public is that at no time were any of the students in the Dike-New Hartford school system at risk."

The name of the male student who was stabbed is not being released. Penning says, "The incident happened off of school property and the student returned to the school to seek medical attention." Sheriff’s deputies are trying to determine what sparked the incident and identify other people that were involved.

"We continue to follow up on leads, but we don’t know at this point what particularly happened," Penning said Thursday afternoon.
