The roads are very slick today, and Rose White with Triple-A Iowa says many accidents are caused by things that can be prevented. White says following to closely to other cars is a problem, and you should increase you following distance. Also watch out on bridges and overpasses where ice forms first.

If you have to go out, White reminds you what to do if you start to slide. Ease off the accelerator and don’t lock up the breaks. Steer in the direction you want the car to go and straighten the wheels as soon as the car is going the way you want to go. Be alert and anticipate any problems with stalled cars or closed lanes of the road.

White says you should make sure you can see and be seen. White says before heading out, make sure the windshield and all windows are completely clear, and clean off the headlights and taillights so other drivers can see you. White says it’s also important to have a winter weather survival kit in your car and make sure your gas tank is at least at the half way mark.
