The Iowa Lottery is launching a new service in an effort to reach more players who are on-the-go. Lottery spokeswoman Tina Potthoff says if you miss the Powerball drawings on Wednesday and Saturday nights, for example, you’ll be able to get instant access to the winning numbers.

Potthoff says: "Players can now receive lotto drawing results, jackpot alerts, updates on games, promotions and special events on their handheld mobile device or cell phone." You’ll need to go to the lottery’s website to sign up, or sign up using your cell phone. Potthoff thinks it’ll be a popular feature for people who are never far from their cell phones, i-Phones and Blackberries.

She says research from various cell phone companies shows the average text messenger is 39 years old, right in the demographic they’re looking to target. She says the service is free, but standard carrier fees apply. Potthoff says players should check their service plan to learn what charges they may incur from receiving text messages.
