The top-ranking Democrat in Iowa is backing Democrat Leonard Boswell’s bid for another term in Congress. Boswell faces a primary challenge from Des Moines Democrat Ed Fallon who ran against Governor Chet Culver in the 2006 Democratic primary for governor.

“He’s got any right to run for any office,” Culver says, adding there’s no ill will between the two former foes. But Culver says he’s firmly in Boswell’s corner when it comes to a Boswell-versus-Fallon match-up and Culver is willing to “go on the road” to help Boswell campaign.

“I really believe he’s getting the job done,” Culver says. “…And I think he’s earned, in my opinion, the right to serve as long as he sees fit.” Culver says Boswell’s background as a Vietnam veteran is one of Boswell’s main attributes.

“He’s one of the few, true military heroes in Congress,” Culver says. “This is a Vietnam vet who’s served with distinction and high honor and so he brings a lot of very valuable experience and ability to the table at a time when we’re looking at a time when we’re looking at a very serious international challenge.”

Last week Senator Tom Harkin said he was backing Boswell, too.
