Icy roads in western Iowa contributed to a fatal two-vehicle accident on Interstate 80 this morning, in Pottawattamie County. According to the Iowa State Patrol, 23-year-old Carly Elizabeth Behncke, of Bettendorf died when the 2002 Mercury Cougar she was driving went out of control on I-80 eastbound and was struck by a 2007 Volvo tractor-trailer, just west of the Shelby exit.

Troopers say Behncke’s car entered the median and spun around before it slid into the westbound lanes of traffic, where it was struck on the passenger side by the semi. Following the crash, the car came to rest in the median, while the semi crossed into the eastbound lanes before coming to rest in a ditch. Behnkce — who was wearing her seat belt — died at the scene. The driver of the semi, 53-year old Michael Brimage, of Chicago, Illinois, was not injured. The accident happened at around 6:40-a.m.
