As the race between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama continues, new attention is focused on so-called “super” delegates to the Democratic Party’s national convention. “Super” delegates are the party’s top leaders and the Iowa Democratic Party will send 11 of these super delegates to the party’s national convention in Denver.

Six of the 11 Iowa super delegates are not backing either candidate at this point. Governor Chet Culver, Senator Tom Harkin, Congressman Bruce Braley and state Senator Mike Gronstal are all “uncommitted” or neutral. The other “uncommitted” Iowa superdelegates are Scott Brennan, the Iowa Democratic Party’s chairman, and Richard Machacek of Winthrop, a member of the Democratic National Committee.

Machacek backed John Edwards and Machacek says after working for Edwards for five years, he’s waiting to see who Edwards endorses. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama each have two super delegates from Iowa in their corner. Congressman Dave Loebsack and State Treasurer Mike Fitzgerald are backing Obama.

Congressman Leonard Boswell and Sandy Opstvedt of Des Moines, a member of the Democratic National Committee, endorsed Clinton in December. The other Iowa super delegate supported Edwards in the Caucuses and was not available to talk with Radio Iowa today.
