For years, Iowans have mailed their federal tax returns to an Internal Revenue Service Center in Kansas City, Missouri. That won’t be the case this year. This year, federal tax returns from Iowa should be mailed to Fresno, California.

The reason behind the change is simple…not nearly as many paper returns are filed these days, so the IRS makes service center changes to balance the workload.

In Iowa last year, 72 percent of individual taxpayers e-filed, one of the highest rates in the country. Iowa taxpayers who don’t e-file, and received a tax package in the mail, will want to use the labels included with the booklet. The labels contain the correct address in Fresno.

Taxpayers who did not receive a package in the mail should refer to the back cover of the instructions to form 1040 or 1040EZ for the correct address.
