Action on the court at the Girls' State Tournament The opening day of the girl’s state basketball tournament concluded with an upset in the 2A quarterfinals.

After falling in the opening round last year on a last second shot Manson-Northwest Webster was able to make the stops this time around. The Cougars limited third rated AGWSR to just three fourth quarter points in a 36-33 win.

Cougar forward Mika Rodewald says they weren’t expected to win against the third ranked team, and it was a great win. Rodewald finished with 12 points and 11 rebounds as Manson-Northwest Webster rallied from an early 11 point deficit.

The Cougars came up empty on their final five possessions of the game but AGWSR could not take advantage. AGWSR coach Bruce Dall says they had trouble against the man-to-man defense and got tired at the end. His team suffered its first loss and closes out the season at 24-1.

Also in 2A, MFL-Mar-Mac’s size and strength eventually won out against North Polk’s speed and quickness. The second ranked Bulldogs offset 25 turnovers by out rebounding the Comets 41-18 in a 61-50 victory . The Bulldogs took control with an 8-0 run early in the third quarter to break away from a one point halftime lead. Megan Howard finished with 26 points for the North Polk but coach Rick Dillinger says they could not get enough rebounds in the second half.
