An approaching storm is expected to bring roughly a half foot of snow to parts of northern Iowa. National Weather Service meteorologist Craig Cogill says a Winter Storm Watch will likely be issue for the area for Wednesday night into Thursday.

"Right now, it looks like primarily snow along and north of Highway 3, with some significant accumulations there…maybe 5 to 7 inches across far northern Iowa," Cogill said. The snow could create dangerous travel conditions for at least a few hours.

"You get into March and usually the snow doesn’t stay around on the road surfaces too much," Cogill said. "Certainly at night time it can stick around, but with warming during the daytime, usually the snow melts off pretty quickly. However, temperatures will remain below normal through the weekend, so it’ll be slow process."

High temperatures on Thursday and Friday in northern Iowa are expected in the mid to upper 30s. Central and southern Iowa can expect rain and a few thunderstorms Wednesday and Thursday, but little if any snow.
