Iowa State coach Gene Chizik says quarterbacks were fair game during Sunday’s scrimmage. The Cyclones enter the final week of spring football and will wrap it up on Saturday with a scrimmage in Jack Trice Stadium that is open to the public. Chizik says they felt like they needed to have the quarterbacks do some things in the running game while taking a hit.

The Cyclones had a lengthy scrimmage that included 120 plays, and he says it looks like they have made strides, although they have a long way to go. He says he’s pleased with the competition for spots.

Austen Arnaud and Phillip Bates are battling to take over the quarterbacking duties from Bret Meyer and

Arnaud says getting tackled made it seem more like a game, as most of the time they haven’t been fully live.

Arnaud says to win the job he will need to become the leader of the offense, and feel comfortable in the offense. Iowa State will be looking to improve upon last year’s 3-9 mark.
