The multi-events wrapped up on Thursday afternoon at the 99th Drake Relays. Former Cedar Rapids Prairie High School standout Fiona Asigbee won the heptathalon and her score of 5,788 to set a new Drake Relays record.

Asibee says she didn’t even know she had the record until they told her when she cross the finish line. Asigbee is considered a contender to make the U.S. Olympic team. She says it’s pretty early in the training season, as she didn’t do any indoor meets. Former Wisconsin standout Joe Detmer rallied to win the decathalon title. His 7,712 points edged out second place finisher Matt Clark from UNI.

Detmer says some of the other competitors weren’t doing so well and he knew if he did well he had a shot. Detmer says his second day got off to a good start and he was able to maintain the momentum and win the hurdles with a person record. He nearly made 16 feet in the pole vault.

Detmer hopes to continue to make progress as the season moves along and will be in Italy in a couple of weeks and in a couple of months it’s the Olympic trials.
