A new handbook on playground safety from the Consumer Product Safety Commission is now available. The executive director of the National Program for Playground Safety at the University of Northern Iowa, Donna Thompson, says the handbook has been a long time coming.

Thompson says it’s the first handbook since 1997 and now includes an age range from six months to 23 months, as she says there needs to be a separate area for those kids to play. Thompson says the handbook has a lot of useful information.

Thompson says there are more guidelines for track rides, and new guidelines for surfacing at playgrounds. Thompson says the handbook is readily available on the internet. She says you can check Playground Safety website and that will also lead you to the CPSC website where you can get a free copy of the handbook. National Playground Safety Week wrapped up Friday.
