Would you want to ride to work with your boss? Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley says he’s had no takers from members of his Congressional staff for a Washington D.C. carpooling effort. Grassley said on Earth Day last month that he was trying to cut down on his driving in the nation’s capitol, but now says, he’s not succeeding.

Grassley says, “I’ve postured to a few staff that live in the neighborhood where I live, not too far from me, to come to my house and carpool in with me and I haven’t had anybody take me up on my offer, but I’m going to keep trying.” He says he and his wife drive about 88 miles a week while in Washington, to work and to church. Grassley, a Republican, says he’s trying to conserve but it’s tough, even for a conservative.

“For my part, I can tell you a hundred miles saved here because I didn’t take a trip to Des Moines one time,” Grassley says, but that was from his Iowa home in New Hartford. He says his efforts to cut down on his driving in Washington D.C. have not yet succeeded. In the past day, Triple-A-Iowa says gasoline prices have risen a few more cents a gallon to set another new record high, with the statewide average now at $3.67 a gallon. Diesel’s also at a new record high average of $4.32 a gallon statewide.
