Police in Ames say a homeless man is dead and another is in custody after an overnight stabbing. Ames police commander Jim Robinson says officers were called to a wooded area near the Iowa DOT buildings on the city’s south side just before 1 a.m. They were told a man needed help.

The officers found 45-year-old Daniel McGonigle suffering from multiple stab wounds. He was pronounced dead early this morning at a Des Moines hospital. "We had a witness within the woods who gave a physical description of a person of interest and that was broadcast to area law enforcement officers. At approximately 9:35 a.m., a person matching the description was located by a Story County deputy walking in the area of Interstate 35 and East 13th Street," Robinson said.

The suspect who was arrested is identified as 45-year-old Glenn Smith. Robinson says Smith admitted to "being in an altercation" with McGonigle and is now charged with second-degree murder.
