Lots of money is missing from the evidence room at the Grinnell Police station. Grinnell Police Chief Jody Matherly says an investigation began Friday into a discrepancy between records and money and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation and the state auditor’s office were contacted and will assist in the probe.

Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation spokesman James Saunders says the amount of missing money is believed to be six thousand dollars or more, but the investigation is continuing. Poweshiek County Attorney Michael Mahaffey says he doesn’t want to confirm what’s missing because the investigation is still active. He says the initial concerns were money versus records and the focus is money.

Matherly says the evidence room is intended as a secure place for certain evidence, such as drugs, money and guns. No arrests have been made.
