It appears Cedar Falls has avoided disaster — at least for the moment. The Cedar River crested at Cedar Falls early this morning at a level almost six feet higher than the previous record high set in 1999.

City leaders say they’re still at a critical stage because of the pressure from the high water on the levee and the potential for more rain. Thousands of volunteers worked to build a sandbag wall yesterday in Cedar Falls and are credited with saving the downtown. At least 90 people overnighted in two Red Cross shelters at U.N.I.
