Iowa Ag Secretary Bill Northey is one of two Republicans holding statewide office. The other five statewide elected posts are held by Democrats. In 2010, Democrat Governor Chet Culver is up for reelection, but during a recent appearance on Iowa Public Television Republican Northey indicated he has little interest in running against Culver and is content with his current job as Secretary of Agriculture.

"I can’t think of anything I’d rather do more," Northey said, "and I’m looking forward to being secretary of (agriculture) as long as Iowa wants me to."

Northey hasn’t chosen a Republican who he’ll be backing in the next governor’s race either. "Who knows who’s on the list?" Northey said on IPTV, laughing with others on the set of "Iowa Press."

Two Republicans — House Republican Leader Christopher Rants of Sioux City and State Auditor Dave Vaudt – have both publicly indicated they are contemplating a run for governor in 2010.
