A late but thrilling finish to the state high school softball tournament in Fort Dodge. Victoria Whitacker singled into right field with one out in the bottom of the seventh to score the winning run as top ranked West Des Moines Valley won a second straight 4A title with a 2-1 victory over Sioux City North.

 

The game had been suspended on Saturday night after a thunderstorm moved through the area and was resumed on Sunday in the bottom of the third with the score tied at one. Courtney Mc Kelvog tossed a three hitter and struck out eight. She allowed only one batter to reach base after play resumed. Valley ends the season 40-5 while Sioux City North closes out with a record of 34-10.

The other three champions were crowned on Saturday, Winterset won the 3A title with a 2-1 victory over Fort Madison. Ashley Bowman’s third inning solo homer to center was the game winner. Making its first trip to state Fort Madison closes at 34-10.

North polk won the 2A title with a 4-2 win over Solon which was bidding for a second consecutive crown. Sammy Snygg tossed a four hitter and her two run homer in the top of the sixth tied the score at two. And eighth rated Newell-Fonda won the 1A championship with a 6-3 win over Martensdale-St. Marys. The Mustangs scored twice in the third then put the game out of reach by scoring four times in the 6th.
