One gold and two disappointments for Iowans at Olympics today

Shawn Johnson Three Iowans completed their competition today at the Olympics in Beijing. Shawn Johnson finally has gold. The 16-year-old gymnast from West Des Moines scored a 16.225 with her difficult balance beam routine and edged teammate Nastia Liukin, who finished with the silver.

Johnson, who will be a junior at Valley High School when she returns home next week, had captured three silver medals before today’s victory. Meanwhile, Des Moines native Lolo Jones’ run at the Olympics ended in devastating fashion.

The 26-year-old Roosevelt grad was leading the 100 meter hurdles finals, when she hit the second to last hurdle and stumbled to a 7th place finish. Her teammate, Dawn Harper, took the gold. Former Iowa Hawkeye Mike Zadick of Solon, a late add to the Olympics in freestyle wrestling, lost his first two matches at 132 pounds and is out of the competition.

Gas prices in Iowa falling; natural gas prices dropping, too

Along with the world market price for crude oil, pump prices in Iowa have been falling.

Tommi Makila of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources says drivers are finally seeing some relief, as gas prices in Iowa have fallen about 10 percent from mid-July to mid-August. "It is interesting that when people start seeing $3.40 prices at the pump, they actually think they are low," Makila says.

On August 18th, the average price in Iowa for gasoline with a 10 percent ethanol blend was $3.54 per gallon. Makila says prices vary from west to east. In western Iowa cities like Des Moines, Council Bluffs and Sioux City, 10 percent ethanol blend were as low as $3.44 a gallon on August 18th — while eastern Iowa pump prices were 10 to 20 cents higher. "The prices are still definitely higher than last year, but we are at least getting closer to those levels than we were just about a month ago," Makila says.

The average price for a gallon of E-10 was $2.77 in August of last year. The price for diesel is also on the decline, dropping to $4.23 per gallon. That’s 46-cents lower than it was in mid-July. The Department of Natural Resources also tracks the prices of the fuels that Iowans use to heat their homes.

"For natural gas, the prices have gone down significantly in the last six to eight weeks and that really is good news," Makila says. "Now, we are actually close to the price levels of a year ago. Just six, eight weeks ago (natural gas was) almost twice the price of last year, so that is definitely good news for the many folks in Iowa who use natural gas for heating."

The prices for heating oil and propane are still high, however. "Both of those prices — heating oil and propane — have been going down in the last month, but they are still at quite a bit higher level than last year," Makila says. "Any person using propane or heating oil, they should really be a bit concerned about this winter." Heating oil prices are running 45 percent higher than in August of last year. Propane prices are 39 percent higher.

Two die in accident near Alton

Two people were killed in a two-vehicle collision near the northwest Iowa town of Alton about 2 P.M. on Monday. The victims have been identified as the driver of a car, 52-year-old Steven Buh of Marion, Iowa, and his passenger, 58-year-old Donald Lake of Omaha.

According to an Iowa State Patrol report, Buh entered Highway 10 from East Division Street and was struck by an eastbound truck driven by 24-year-old Jason Bodine of Orange City. Bodine was taken to the Orange City Hospital by Alton Ambulance. The accident remains under investigation.

Northwest Iowa man charged with arson

A northwest Iowa man is charged with arson after a fire in an apartment building in Orange City on Monday morning. Orange City Police and Fire Departments and the Iowa State Fire Marshal’s office investigated the fire at the Orange City Plaza apartments.

Ten people were in the building about 8 a-m Monday and were not injured. Authorities say the fire in the apartment was intentionally set. There was some smoke damage in some of the other apartments. Thirty-year-old Paul Johnson of Orange City is charged with 10 counts of arson in the first-degree. The investigation is continuing and other charges are pending.

Nebraska man confesses to Iowa murder

A man in Nebraska has confessed to a murder in southwest Iowa. Nemaha County, Nebraska, officials are working with Council Bluffs police as they investigate the death of a man who’s identified as 62-year-old Richard Griffin.

Neighbors say another man who had been trying to turn his life around had been living with Griffin. Monday afternoon, 44-year-old Scott Reed apparently walked into the Nemaha County Sheriff’s office and said he’d killed a man in Council Bluffs. Police there went to the address and found Griffin dead. Reed is facing second-degree murder charges in Pottawattamie County.

Northeast Iowa stations charged with illegally using E-85

While promoters of ethanol have been pushing for more E-85 gas pumps, a state lawsuit alleges two northeast Iowa convenience stores were illegally using the product. Bob Brammer of the Iowa Attorney General’s office says the Pronto Markets in Sumner and Fairbank has the 85-percent ethanol blend gas mixed into other pumps.

Brammer says a routine inspection by the Iowa Department of Agriculture found a higher level of ethanol than should be present in the tanks at the stations. Brammer says the gas pumps were not labeled for E-85 fuel, and state officials do not believe it was an accident.

Brammer says they believe it was a consumer fraud violation where the owners knowingly blended the E-85 fuels into other tanks made for other blends of fuel and not labeled for the E-85 fuel. Brammer says selling the E-85 fuel at the same price as the 10-percent blend of ethanol, or non-ethanol gas, can net a station a good profit.

Brammer says the E-85 fuel can be purchased at a substantially lower price than the other fuels because of tax breaks and incentives given to E-85 fuels. Brammer says the suit is against Jerry Fratzke of Jesup, the owner of the two Pronto stores.

Brammer says they filed the consumer fraud lawsuit in Black Hawk County and got a temporary restraining order. He says they’ve also asked for a permanent restraining order to prevent any other violations and have asked for penalties of up to 40-thousand dollars per violation.

Brammer says the suit alleges the two stores bought at least 25-hundred gallons of E-85 blended ethanol fuel from March 10 to June 6, 2008, and then sold the fuel as either unleaded regular gas or 10-percent ethanol-enhanced fuel. Brammer says there was a 33-cent difference in the price of the E-85 and the other fuels.
