Classic car and truck lovers from across the Midwest are headed for Fort Dodge and this weekend’s silver anniversary edition of the Cruise to the Woods. It’s billed as Iowa’s largest car-cruise show and will involve close to a thousand vehicles — ranging from the big sedans of the 40s and 50s to the muscle cars of the early 70s and later. Barb Briggs of the W-C Cruisers Car Club in Webster City co-founded the event 25 years ago.
They’re expecting a good showing of cars from all over the region, including: Nebraska, Missouri, South Dakota, Illinois and Minnesota. The first cruise in 1983 was held at Briggs Woods Park near Webster City and involved 75 cars. Last year, even with heavy rains, the event drew 800 vehicles. In honor of the 25th annual cruise, Briggs says there will be a few special features this year.
The Humboldt Raceway will let participants hold "grudge match" races during the weekend or just let the classic car owners take their vehicles out to see how fast they’ll go. Other events are underway at the Webster County Fairgrounds, including drive-in movies in the evenings. For gawkers, the vehicles will be on display through mid-afternoon Sunday at the Fairgrounds.
