Republican Palin makes pitch in Dubuque

Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin made a last pitch for votes Monday in Dubuque. "So Iowa, if you share our commitments and if you work hard, if you know what hard work feels like and you want to get ahead and if you believe that America is the land of possibilities and you don’t want your dreams dashed by the Obama tax plan increases , then Iowa we are asking for your vote tomorrow," Palin said.

About 5,000 gathered in Dubuque’s River Center and most stood for three hours, waiting for Palin’s mid-afternoon appearance. Palin’s Dubuque visit mirrors President George W. Bush’s Election Eve rally in Dubuque four years ago. Palin’s next stop: Colorado Springs.

Chizik says ISU will have success as players mature

Iowa State coach Gene Chizik says The Cyclones will have more success as the players mature. ISU has lost seven straight games heading into this weekends visit to Colorado and currently 12 freshman are in the two-deep lineup.

Chizik says they are not playing young guys because they want to throw them in and all the older guys can’t play, he says they’re playing "because they are the best we’ve got." He says the young guys are playing to get experience so they will be good in a few years, they are the best players on the roster.

The Cyclones are 2-7 overall and still in search of their first Big-12 victory. Chizik says he’s excited about what’s happening down the road, but he’s not pleased nor is anyone else about the record. Chizik says one of the bright spots this season has been the play of special teams. He says they’ve had a punt and a kickoff get away, but other than that, things have been good.

Chizik is not concerned that the losing streak will damage the confidence of the younger players on the team. He says the players are playing and trying to have fun and get better with the understanding they have time to develop as players. He says they are frustrated about not winning, but see how good they can be and the team can be down the road. Colorado is 4-5 overall and 1-4 in the Big-12.

Report clears Creston police officers of wrongdoing

A report says the actions of two Southwest Iowa police officers did not contribute to the death of a local man who caused a disturbance at a grocery store. The Creston police officers responded to the local Fareway grocery store on August 25th.

Officers say a man, who apparently had a seizure in the store, became combative. The officers used force, including a Taser, to subdue 59-year-old Ronald Adkisson – who was taken to the jail and charged with disorderly conduct. Adkisson was found dead outside the jail just 15 minutes after he was released. An autopsy showed he died of a seizure disorder.

The Iowa D.C.I. and Union County Attorney Timothy Kenyon reviewed the case and have found the officers followed department protocol and that their actions did not cause Adkisson’s seizures.

Creighton survey says Iowa economy slipping into recession

Iowa’s economy is slipping into recession, according to one of the region’s top economists. Ernie Goss, an economics professor at Creighton University, says his surveys of business leaders and supply managers across Iowa continue to show ailing, worsening numbers month after month after month.

Goss says, “This leading economic indicator for the state of Iowa is now into negative territory, below growth neutral, so I expect job losses to mount in the months ahead and a lot of that can be traced to some of the downturn in export-related companies, also, anything to do with automobile production, that would be parts manufacturing, not doing very well at all in Iowa.”

Goss says the survey for October shows Iowa is “pointing to a recession” but he won’t say Iowa’s -in- a recession, as he says the exact definition of recession is elastic. “Normally, what I look for are three or four months of job losses and we have not had that for Iowa yet,” Goss says. “I expect to see that in the months ahead. I think Iowa will be losing jobs over the next few months and into 2009.”

While hiring will rise soon in Iowa for the holiday season, Goss says it’ll only be temporary and he expects Iowa’s unemployment rate to move above five-percent in early 2009. The foul financial times in the state and nation, he says, are not permanent.

Goss says: “It’s just going to take time. We’re going to have to move through this economic downturn and we will move beyond it. Some individuals are calling for another depression. I don’t see it. Our numbers don’t suggest that or indicate that. The national numbers don’t suggest that, don’t indicate that.” Goss says the holiday shoppping season ahead may be one of the worst in 15 years.

McCain signs reported stolen in Clay County

There’s a report of possible partisan political sign thefts in Northwest Iowa. The Clay County Republican Party chair, George Moriarity, says some 50 McCain-Palin yard signs have been reported stolen, including a string of thefts near the country club in Spencer.

He says the signs disappeared long before last week’s strong winds. Moriarity says some 20 badly damaged McCain signs were dropped off at Republican Headquarters, and it isn’t clear of why they were left off. The Clay County Sheriff and Spencer police say they’ve had no reports of Obama campaign signs being stolen.

UNI student produces Palin rap video

The woman at John McCain’s rally in Cedar Falls who worked her way through the crowd and stood on stage, pretending to be Sarah Palin, has produced a rap video. University of Northern Iowa sophomore Eva Anderson wore glasses, styled her hair like Palin and stood right behind McCain at his rally on the U.N.I. campus. She mouthed "thank you" for the cameras when McCain praised his running mate.

Calling herself "EvaDivaSuperstar," the 19-year-old has produced a rap video. "Hey, I’ve got something to say to all you Palin impersonators like Tina Fey," Anderson says. "You see us in ones and twos and threes. It’s a Palin epidemic. It’s a Palin disease. There’s a lot of fakes. Yea, I’m keepin’ tally — so let’s see you show your face at a political rally."

Anderson’s mugging for the cameras at the McCain rally in Cedar Falls was replayed over and over on the Internet and on cable news programs last week. Her rap video lasts a little longer than two minutes — perhaps expanding the U.N.I. student’s 15 minutes of fame.

"So listen up cuz I’m going to preach. I even took a class on political speech. Stand back, yo, cuz I’m gonna crush ya. I’m the next best thing cuz from my house I see Russia," EvaDivaSuperstar raps. Go to www.radioiowa.com to watch EvaDiva’s Palin rap.

Anderson graduated from Center Point-Urbana High School and played the lead in last summer’s "High School Musical" production at Theatre Cedar Rapids. She’s majoring in music at U.N.I. The real Palin, by the way, campaigned in Dubuque this afternoon

You can view the Anderson video on the Politico website .
