Independence School District voters have rejected a bond issue for a new high school for the fifth time.A record number of voters turned out Tuesday to decide on an $11.78 million bond that would help pay for a $19.5 million high school.

The issue was narrowly defeated with 57.6% approval — needing 60% to pass. The total number of votes cast 3,243 was a new record turnout — breaking the 3,200 mark set in 2004. Even though the bond issue was defeated again, for those in favor of the new high school, it was an improvement. The last time the issue was defeated in 2006 it received just 41% approval.
