One person was killed and four others injured during a single-vehicle accident on Highway 65 early this morning in southern Iowa’s Lucas County. The Iowa State Patrol says a 1999 Ford Windstar van was traveling north on the highway when it slid onto the east shoulder south of Lucas.

The driver, 36-year old Agustin Cano Gonzalez, of Sedalia, Missouri, overcorrected, which resulted in the van crossing the road and entering the west ditch, where it rolled several times, ejecting four passengers, one of whom died from his injuries. The Patrol identified the victim as 11-year old Miguel Cano of Sedalia.

Among the injured was 13-year old Olga Cano, six-year old Isidro Alejo, 14-year old Romiro Alejo, and nine-year old Louis Silva, all from Sedalia. Officials say the roadway was completely covered with snow and ice when the accident occurred at around 12:30-a.m. The road conditions are believed to have contributed to the accident, which remains under investigation.
