An uptemo style has served Simpson women’s basketball coach Brian Niemuth well. In his 22nd year at the helm Niemuth earned his 400th career victory Thursday night when the Storm defeated Luther 73-43.

Niemuth credits a fast-paced style that has helped a program that has won five Iowa Conference titles and earned six trips to the NCAA division three tournament in the last decade.

Niemuth says they went to this style 11 years ago and the players like it, and he likes it because they can play  lots of players and it is a lot of fun. The system always allows the Storm to develop depth. This season, ten players are averaging double figure minutes in playing time.

He says they have 7 seniors and next year they will have 5 to 7 players with lots of experience, so he says they never have to really rebuild. The Storm average just under 80 points per game but Niemuth says the system is based on pressure defense. Opponents are averaging just over 37% from the floor and more than 25 turnovers per game.

Niemuth says the defense gives them their points and easier shots. He says the shoot a good percentage when the run and they run when they create turnovers on defense and he says the team understands that. Simpson is 12-1 overall and ranked tenth nationally. They return to action on Saturday at home against Loras.
