The Iowa Department of Revenue is sending letters to some Iowans threatening to suspend their professional licenses if they do not pay money owed to the state. Department of Revenue spokesperson, Renee Mulvey says it includes a wide variety of people, including doctors, nurses, electricians, investigators, architects and attorneys. She says they are trying to get those people to pay up before they have their licenses revoked.

Mulvey says those who owe are getting notice. She says they are sending out a letter explaining what the debt is for, how much it is and how they can pay it. Mulvey says they will also let the person know they have to pay or the state will take action to have their license revoked.

She says the amount owe is in the millions. Mulvey says they’ve identified 4,562 debtors with licenses that owe $30-million-661,086. That averages out to about $7,000 per person. Mulvey says it’s likely the people know they owe the money.

"It’s possible that it could have been overlooked or forgotten, but in most cases we’ve already contacted people," Mulvey says. She says this time though, they will act with an additional tool and revoke their licenses if they don’t respond. Mulvey says they have 20 days to respond once they receive the new letter.
