A medical examiner’s report show an Iowa Department of Corrections official died from natural causes, not carbon monoxide poisoning. Deputy Iowa Corrections Director Larry Brimeyer died at his home in Mechanicsville on Monday. He was 62.

Emergency responders initially suspected carbon monoxide caused his death, but the Cedar County Medical Examiner’s Office has now ruled that Brimeyer suffered a heart attack. Brimeyer served as the head of the eastern Iowa operations for the Iowa Department of Corrections since 1998. Prior to that, he was deputy warden of the State Penitentiary in Anamosa.

Another top official with the state corrections department died of a heart attack while shoveling snow at his eastern Iowa home in early December. Fifty-eight year old Lowell Brandt was the warden of the Oakdale state prison in Coralville.
