A Council Bluffs man is accused of stabbing his stepdaughter, then himself, after fleeing from law officers. Police Sergeant Dave Dawson says police were called to the Bluffs Acres mobile home park on Tuesday afternoon.

The suspect is identified as 42-year-old Paul Kissel. Reports say Kissel broke the window out of an SUV and stabbed the 13-year-old girl, who’s name wasn’t released. Sergeant Dawson says when police arrived, Kissel ran off and was found critically injured two blocks away where he’d stabbed himself in the chest and neck.

Dawson says an Iowa State Patrolman apprehended Kissel. Both the father and daughter were rushed to the hospital and both are expected to recover. Kissel is charged with attempted murder. Neighbor Cindy Van Cleave says she knows the family and was shocked by Tuesday’s events.

Van Cleave says, "He takes them all fishing, they camp together, it’s a very tight-knit family." Witnesses say Kissel took a snow shovel to his SUV and asked authorties to hurt him before he ran from the home.
