Council Bluffs man accused of stabbing stepdaugher

A Council Bluffs man is accused of stabbing his stepdaughter, then himself, after fleeing from law officers. Police Sergeant Dave Dawson says police were called to the Bluffs Acres mobile home park on Tuesday afternoon.

The suspect is identified as 42-year-old Paul Kissel. Reports say Kissel broke the window out of an SUV and stabbed the 13-year-old girl, who’s name wasn’t released. Sergeant Dawson says when police arrived, Kissel ran off and was found critically injured two blocks away where he’d stabbed himself in the chest and neck.

Dawson says an Iowa State Patrolman apprehended Kissel. Both the father and daughter were rushed to the hospital and both are expected to recover. Kissel is charged with attempted murder. Neighbor Cindy Van Cleave says she knows the family and was shocked by Tuesday’s events.

Van Cleave says, "He takes them all fishing, they camp together, it’s a very tight-knit family." Witnesses say Kissel took a snow shovel to his SUV and asked authorties to hurt him before he ran from the home.

Changes in the works for CR flood volunteers

Big changes are on the way to the process of assigning volunteers to rebuilding projects in Cedar Rapids. Since the floods hit in June, thousands of volunteers have helped clear debris and gut homes. But, many of those workers had never worked in a disaster situation before.

Flood victim Frank King says everyone appreciated their efforts, but they weren’t necessarily the right people for the job. "The volunteers made some mistakes that were costly in dollars, time and frustration," King said. Now, a new crop of volunteers with much more experience will help the city rebuild. King donated his flood-damaged home to one of those groups.

Skilled and experienced craftsmen from the Christian Reformed World Relief Committee, including Mike Tigchelaar, will use King’s house for shelter while they work on projects. "If you’re going to do a job, you better do it right, or don’t bother doing it. That’s our motto," Tigchelaar said.

The Long Term Recovery Coalition has also hired a construction coordinator to monitor projects. Coalition member Leslie Wright says the goal is to make sure the next round of volunteers have more experience. "We’re doing a more formal process where the homes are assessed and we sign agreements with the homeowner so they feel comfortable and understand the work being done on their home," Wright said. The Long Term Recovery Coalition has more than one-and-a-half-million dollars to help flood victims restore and repair their homes.

Podolak says he’s getting treatment, replacement search on hold

Ed Podolak The retirement of a high-profile Iowa sports announcer could be delayed. Former University of Iowa football player and radio analyst Ed Podolak announced on January 14th that he was retiring from his job on the Hawkeye football broadcasts.

Podalak said he had been considering retirement as his real estate business is in northern California, and the commute to the Midwest each weekend to do the games has been challenging.

But the announcement led to much speculation as it came after unflattering photos of Podolak celebrating at the January Outback Bowl had circulated on the internet. U-I Athletic Director Gary Barta said that he was “disappointed” with Podolak after the photos turned up.

Podolak has now released a statement saying after considerable deliberation with his family and close friends, Podolak has decided to seek professional treatment. Podolak’s statement says the people closest to him in his life have convinced him that treatment is in his best interest.

U-I athletic director Gary Barta also issued a statement saying he “wholeheartedly supports” Podolak’s decision to enter treatment. Barta says he talked with Podolak and says while Podolak has not idicated he will come out of retirement, the search for his replacement has been put on hold.
